About

Welcome to JapanFoodStyle.com — your gateway to the rich and diverse world of Japanese food culture.

Who we are

We are a passionate Japanese family living between Japan and Australia, united by our love for sharing the incredible culinary heritage of Japan. Our journey began with a deep appreciation for the unique flavours, traditions, and stories behind Japanese regional cuisine. Over the years, we’ve noticed a growing trend of people leaving the countryside of Japan — places rich with history, tradition, and some of the most authentic food experiences you can find. This inspired us to create JapanFoodStyle.com.

Why we’re here

While the bustling metropolises of Japan have their charm, the lesser-explored rural areas hold the true essence of Japanese culture and cuisine. These regions offer not only breathtaking sights but also an opportunity to savour local food styles and unique regional dishes that are steeped in history. We want to encourage travellers and food enthusiasts alike to step off the beaten path, venture beyond the usual tourist hubs, and discover the culinary treasures hidden in Japan’s countryside.

What you’ll find here

  • Seasonal eating. What is worth travelling for, and the weeks it is actually worth travelling for it.
  • Regional food highlights. The distinctive culinary styles of Japan’s many prefectures, one prefecture at a time.
  • Real places. Small restaurants, makers and markets we have eaten at ourselves — with what we paid, how to get there, and whether they can look after a visitor who speaks no Japanese.
  • Cultural insight. The stories, traditions and history behind the food.
  • Recipes from the family kitchen. Step-by-step guides so you can bring a taste of Japan home.

How we work

Every place on this site has been visited in person. Every photograph is ours. We tell you the date we went and the price we actually paid, in yen. If we have not been, we do not write about it.

  • We ask before we photograph, and again before we publish your name.
  • We do not accept payment for a good write-up. If a visit is ever hosted or paid for, we say so on the page.
  • We say plainly whether a place can look after a visitor who speaks no Japanese — so nobody turns up who should not.
  • If you want anything changed or taken down, write to us and we will do it.

We use AI tools to help draft and organise this site. Nothing is published without a person reading it first, and no photograph on this site is AI-generated. The pictures are of the meal we ate, on the day we say we ate it.

For restaurant and business owners

[PLACEHOLDER] A short Japanese-language note for owners is coming. It will be written and checked by a native speaker before it is published.
